The Interior Design Trends of 2022

New year, new interior design trends! If you are looking into renovating your home this year, read our article to find out which are the most popular trends right now. There are varying opinions and 2022 is just starting, but we already see multiple designers and publications repeating a few specific trends, which we will discuss below.

Bye Grey, Hello Brown

The colour grey has been dominating the landscape for a considerable time. Now is the moment for another to shine – brown. American interior designers have noticed that their clients have grown tired of the grey trend and they propose a substitute in the face of warm chocolate brown, as well as camel and caramel, that can make any room “pop”.

A Splash of Colour

Apart from the chocolate nuances that are growing in popularity, experts predict that bolder colours will also take centre stage this year. Clients appear to be bored with the reserved tones of the past few years as they dream of eclectic colours like citrus green, magenta, and RAF blue.

Travel-inspired Printed Wallpaper

A few publications declared that travel-inspired wallpaper was back. This style was highly popular in the 1970’s and we are happy to learn that it’s making a comeback. Experiment with colour and materials by getting a beautiful wallpaper depicting far-away lands and exotic animals.

Travel-inspired furniture

As a continuation of the last trend, travel-inspired furniture and decoration are also in. Beautiful artworks from other countries, vintage cigarette tables, and magnificent lamps that look straight out of One Thousand and One Nights will soon appear in many homes. After two years of battling coronavirus, you are allowed to indulge in some exquisite escapism.

Dual-purpose Rooms

Considering the fact that many people are now working at home, their spaces should reflect this duality of home and work. Many bedrooms, kitchens, and living rooms already double as work offices, so some people choose to permanently incorporate elements from two different spaces. Enjoy your new bedroom-gym or library-living room.

Curved Furniture

Curved Furniture Design Trend

Angles are out, you heard it first! Apparently, curved pieces of furniture are the newest craze. People are looking for ways to soften up their environments, which can be achieved by introducing curved shapes in their interior. This is not limited to curved furniture like tables or couches though, we also see new wallpapers depicting soft arches in vibrant colour.

Nurture Nature

As with many trends on this list, this one is again the direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are all seeking ways to make our homes more comfortable as we are spending most of our time there. To put our lack of connection with the outside at ease, we are currently simply bringing it inside.

Natural materials like wood, marble, and stoneware are only becoming more popular ever since the pandemic started. They are also preferred in their most organic and essential form, as Bauhaus postulated decades ago. Apart from that, we see more plants and even small trees that bring a sense of normalcy in our not quite normal circumstances.

On the other end, we have the illusion of nature with the printed wallpaper depicting flowers, trees, and in fact, whole jungles.

I, the House Robot

Every year we are introduced to yet another piece of modern technology promising to revolutionise or outright make our boring chores obsolete. Think smart refrigerators, smart hoovers, smart home assistants like Alexa and whatnot. We can’t get enough of these wonderful gadgets, especially now that we spend more time at home.

We also notice that these feats of modern technology are affecting the design of our homes as well. Futuristic furniture and ornamentation, we believe, is going to find itself in many houses this year.

Eclectic Style

While we seek to modernise our dwellings, we are also looking for ways to make them unique and memorable. People are becoming less and less reserved and they now experiment with mixing various interior design styles that can make their homes truly one-of-a-kind. This can be done by introducing more and different types of materials, textures, and of course, furniture.

There are now whole stores whose message is centred around uniqueness and they achieve that by rejecting mass-produced items in favour of hard-to-find treasures that only appear as single units.

Moreover, people are looking into ways to minimise their consumption by buying things that they will not replace once another trend pops up. This makes for the best excuse to invest in expensive interior that will not only make your home unique, but also sustainable.

Maximalism

If there is one thing that can make anyone believe that history is not linear, but cyclical, are interior design trends. They tend to appear and disappear, only to reappear again in a few years or decades. Apparently, that’s what minimalism is experiencing right now.

The style that dominated every reputable interior design magazine is now going back to the ether in order to make space for maximalism to come back. Maximalism is all about experiment and being a little bit extra and sassy. Bring in some rich textures and don’t be afraid to mix two or more styles at a time.
